Theme: Christians and Vows

Text: “And Jacob vowed a vow, saying If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give bread to eat, and raiment to put on, So that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then shall the LORD be my God. And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house…” – Genesis 28:20-22.

Comment: Jacob, the grandson of Abraham was tried in fulfilling his father, Isaac’s, wish to take a wife from his mother’s people as against marrying any of the daughters of Canaan where he dwelt temporarily. Before undertaking the journey to Padanaram, he sought the help of the Almighty God in a dream and later vowed as in the leading text for today.

The LORD blessed Jacob throughout his journey and gave him favour to get Rachel as his wife. In appreciation, he vowed and he built an altar in the place which he called Bethel. (Genesis 35:1-15) It is always rewarding to commit one’s ways to the LORD (Psalm 37:5) and for one to wait patiently on Him. – Psalm 27:14.

Had King David not appreciated the need to perform one’s vow to God, he would not have spoken about it in Psalm 56:12. Sincere worshippers of God who trust in Him understand that there is no impossibility with Him, hence they were inspired to make vows to Him. – Luke 1:37.
