Theme: THE SAVING AND HEALING POWER OF GOD ALMIGHTY

Text: And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together” “And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.” – 1 Samuel 17:10, 44.

Comment: It is well known that people use a variety of power tactics to push or prompt people into the direction they want. These include bullying, demanding, threatening, negotiating and so on. While Saul was king of Israel, Goliath the giant from Gath, intimidated the people of Israel with his monstrous stature, for he was “six cubits and a span,” which according to the Smith’s Bible Dictionary, is about 10½

feet high. He was therefore a formidable foe. He was defiant of the armies of Israel being much taller and stronger, and therefore looked with disdain on all those around him. When Saul and all Israel heard his words, as in the citation for today, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid. “And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.  And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up….”  (1 Samuel 17:4-7, 24, 25) The giant strutted before the armies of Israel for 40 days.  -1 Samuel 17:16.

People of God should not be intimidated by the devil’s devices but should trust in God at all times to deliver them. Scripture says: “Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.” – Proverbs 3:25, 26.
