Text: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father” - John 14:12.
Comment: As the earthly mission of the Lord Jesus Christ was winding down, he told his disciples, particularly the apostles that if they keep faith in him, he would empower them to move the work of his Father to greater heights. By this statement, Christ meant that they (apostles) would spread the work of preaching the gospel to more cities and towns than he (Christ) did. In obedience to the command of the Lord, Peter refused to be cowed by threats from the Jewish leaders that they should desist from preaching the gospel; rather “…daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ”. - Acts 5:42.
The Lord strengthened Apostle Paul bolstering him to go to the Corinthians to preach to the people. The Lord said to him: “Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace…I have much people in this city...And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them” - Acts 18:9-11.
As the Lord's free men, the apostles went round spreading the gospel message, healing all of their diseases and carrying out other good works in the name of Christ. “And truly, after the ascension of their master to heaven, the apostles spent a good deal of their time spearheading the dissemination of the gospel message to several areas. King David declared, “While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being” - Psalm 146:2.
