Man in his effort to understand the universe and everything in it, including himself, has gone into various areas of studies in the field of science, propounded various theories and principles and tried to make sense of the circles, changes, stages, arrangements, order and organisms that make up his surroundings. However, the more he researches, the more confused he gets, because he has bluntly refused to acknowledge the existence and powers of the Owner of the universe Himself. Apostle Paul did state, “Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. Therefore let no man glory in men...” - 1 Corinthians 3:18-21.
Text: “Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.” - Psalm 49:20
Comment: At his creation, God Almighty endowed man with attributes, first and most important of which is “wisdom” - for man to guide his affairs with - but man, rather than delight in the laws of God, turned to his own knowledge.
However, evaluating the wisdom of man over the course of man's history, it can be seen that they have rather brought him pains and death, than true happiness. The preacher King Solomon stated, “Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions”. (Ecclesiastes 7:29) The AK 47, is probably the most popular and most widely used firearm on earth. It is said to be very efficient – hardly jams, is durable and shoots under water. However, it is said to also be the cause of thousands and even millions of deaths through human history. The designer of this deadly weapon, Mikhail Kalashnikov in a letter to the head of Russia's Orthodox Church, written shortly before his death, revealed that he was lately afflicted with spiritual torment, that he felt responsible for the millions of deaths caused by his revolutionary sub-machine gun. In his words, “My spiritual pain is unbearable. I keep asking the same insoluble question. If my riffle deprived people of life, then can it be that I, a Christian and an Orthodox believer, was to blame for their deaths?” Certainly, any device that is for the killing of human beings works against the divine purpose. – Exodus 20:13.
