“And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.” - Matthew 24:10
One of the signs of the last days as stated by our Lord Jesus Christ is that many people will generally be so concerned about their personal interests that they would readily betray and hate one another. There is so much suspicion, hatred, misunderstanding, greed, selfishness, and violence among people, especially in the cities. Societies are generally richer and freer than in ages past, yet people are lonelier more insecure and generally dissatisfied and unhappy.
It is certain that without a sense of shared obligations and norms that would link people with one another, they would be more or less islands to themselves and the idea of being our “neighbour's keeper” would be out. It is the love that Christians have for one another that sets them apart. St. Peter exhorted: “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently.” - 1Peter 1:22
