Theme: THE WILL OF GOD

INTRODUCTION

The word “will” in this context means “desire” or “purpose”. “God’s will” encompass a lot – His sovereignty, providence, moral guidance, keeping of His statutes, etc. It is of utmost necessity that a Christian should in the first instance know the will of God as without it, it will be impossible to do the pleasure of the Almighty Father. (Proverbs 19:2; Hosea 4:6; 1 Timothy 2:3, 4) Worshippers of God are therefore required to live by His guiding principles as enshrined in the Holy Bible. This shows that we are to live the life of obedience to God; and the keeping of ethical requirements in response to His covenant of having true knowledge of Him and His son Jesus Christ. For the will of God to be done, it must be known, understood and demonstrated by sincere and true worshippers of God. – Psalm 40:10; Matthew 6:10.

Text: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” – Romans 12:1, 2.

Comment: In the Mosaic era, God’s people were required to worship Him by presenting living sacrifices and then to offer praises to Him in appreciation of His goodness. This is the ‘wave offering’. (Leviticus 23:9-14) It was a shadow of things to come. (Hebrews 10:1) Under the new covenant, we are required to set aside the fleshly lusts in the work of the ministry of Christ. (Matthew 6:33; Galatians 5:16-18) In making our bodies a living sacrifice, we must sacrifice certain things like our inhibitions towards other people’s opinion; our emotions (frustration, sadness, anger, depression and hardness of heart); our mindset by removing doubts and carnal thoughts from the mind. We must sacrifice our experiences like pain, anxiety, bad ideas, victimisation, injustice and mistreatment and above all we must sacrifice our bodies by offering sincere and faithful service unto God and deny ourselves of worldly lusts. – 1 John 2:15-17.
