Theme: BEWARE OF COVETOUSNESS

Text: “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless.” – Ecclesiastes 5:10 (New International Version).

Comment: One who is covetous is never satisfied with what he has; if he makes so much money or has access to great wealth, he still feels he is not grabbing enough of it and this makes him go deeper into the hole of endless acquisitions, in an ungodly manner. It is a pitiable, meaningless and worthless state of slavery for anyone to fall into. A Christian businessman has to make profit to stay in business, but he should never use his business as a vehicle to exploit or take advantage of people. A righteous civil servant or public office holder must render due service to people without dispossessing them of their property or money, nor use their positions to corner public funds. If they do, then they will be guilty of covetousness. By contrasting the attitudes of Joseph and Felix to public office, we will see that covetousness is evil. – Genesis 41:33, 38-40, 53-57; Acts 24:25-27, Isaiah 1:23.
