Theme: THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Text: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” – Luke 4:18,19.

Comment: When our Lord Jesus Christ entered the synagogue in those days and asked for the book of the prophet Isaiah, he read from Isaiah Chapter 61:1-3, which is a prophecy about what the Messiah would do when he receives the anointing spirit from God Almighty. The gospel he would expound will gladden the hearts of the humble ones who had been yearning to know the true way to God. He will enliven those who had become hopeless because of the injustices and oppressions in the world. He will give freedom to those who had been wallowing in ignorance, confusion and sin at the instance of the devil; alert one and all that the time had come for all to serve God in truth as God will someday destroy the devil and establish a new world order of peace and life everlasting on the earth. – John 8:31, 32, 36.

Those who had been gathered to God through the work of Jesus Christ, our captain of salvation should copy his example and do only those things that please the Father. (John 8:29) He asked the unbelieving Jews: “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”  See also Luke 6:46-49.  Scripture says: “So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.” – James 2:12.
