Theme: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A GOOD PERSONAL IDENTITY
Text: “Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up a pillar for himself, which is in the King’s Valley. For he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance. He called the pillar after his own name. And to this day it is called Absalom’s Monument.” – 2 Samuel 18: 18 (New King James Version).
Comment: It is the desire of every good man, who has worked hard to build a good name for himself, to leave something to be remembered for. Sons are more often considered as first choice. Absalom had thus provided for his future. The question however is, What name did he live behind? The life of Absalom showed one who was a deviant fellow, one who must have his way no matter what, who cared very little about others, about order and discipline. (1 Corinthians 14:33, 40) The life of Absalom was not worthy of remembrance. The fact that Absalom chose a stone for his memorial shows that he lacked faith in God Almighty to give him a son. Also, he had a self-righteous spirit and pride, adjudging himself fit to be king instead of his father, and impatient for God’s time and privilege. Scripture states, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” – Proverbs 22:1.
