Theme: COPING WITH LONELINESS

Text: “The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34: 18. (English Standard Version)

Comment:  Loneliness leads to a crushed spirit, that is, a spirit of defeat. Here, the Psalmist says that the Lord helps people who are crushed in spirit and who have become brokenhearted. Loss of life or job or accommodation could lead to being brokenhearted. At such a time, everything is against the person. (2 Corinthians 11:23-31) Some lonely people tend to blame themselves for their plight even if they are not the cause. They believe that they are not good enough or that they have not done enough and that no one cares for them, no one bothers to check on them. Such a person should turn to God. (Isaiah 45:22).  It is good for a lonely person to examine their circumstances and see whether they had done things that drove people away or whether it is just the nature of things at that time in their lives. (Proverbs 19:7;  2 Thessalonians 3:14) Once a lonely person has ascertained that they have not directly caused their loneliness, they should focus on God. (Isaiah 66:5) If by acts or omission we have scared people away from us, we can begin to make amends and God will help us at the end by His grace and power. – Job 36:9-11.
