Theme: THE DANGER OF HYPOCRISY

Text: “Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.” – Matthew 6:2.

Text: “The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female”. – Matthew 19:2, 3.

Comment: Pharisees, who believed in angels, spirits and the resurrection, came to Christ to test him with their trouble-laden question, citing the law of Moses, that a man can raise a petition against his wife and sue for divorce. (Deuteronomy 24:1) Their aim was to entangle the Master in their web of ignorance, if he would disavow the leverage Moses accorded them on marriage; because in their myopia, they saw Moses as a greater prophet, unaware that Moses himself, prophetically, spoke about Christ as greater than him. (Genesis 49:10; Deuteronomy 18:15, 18) Jesus Christ did not accede to the issue of divorce; rather, he strengthened the marital bond, saying: “For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” – Matthew 19:4, 5.
