Text: “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, …Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.” – Mark 7:21-23.
Comment: God’s children should beware of covetousness because it is akin to idolatry. More so, those who occupy and aspire to spiritual office must be careful because covetousness debars one from such office and to excel in it. (Exodus 18:21, 1 Timothy 3:1-3, 8) Church leaders must not be greedy or covetous because it dampens their sense of duty to God, clouds their judgment and makes them double-tongued. (Isaiah 56:10, 11, Deuteronomy 16:19; 1 Thessalonians 2:5, Acts 20:33, 34) Today, false pastors (who are counterparts of the covetous Pharisees) also love money. They covet worshippers’ possessions through lies, long prayers and attractive speeches. (Matthew 23:14; 2 Peter 2:1-3). They are hereby warned, and we too should beware of them because greater damnation awaits all who use God’s work to practise covetousness.
