Text: “And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams”. – 1 Samuel 15:22.
Comment: The text for today was the statement of Samuel the prophet to King Saul after Saul had deliberately disobeyed the instruction of God concerning the Amalekites, whom God had declared would be destroyed for attacking the Israelites in the wilderness. (Exodus 17:8-16) In the course of time, God instructed King Saul through Samuel the prophet to carry out His purpose of destroying the Amalekites. (1 Samuel 15:2, 3) King Saul disobeyed this divine instruction by sparing Agag the king, the best of the sheep, oxen, fatlings, lambs. (1 Samuel 15:9) To make matters worse, when this gross act of disobedience was pointed out to him, he showed no remorse, saying it was his subordinates that brought the best animals for sacrifice to God. (1 Samuel 15:13-15, 20, 21). Consequently, Saul was rejected as king for this act of disobedience. We should endeavour to be loyal and obedient to our Creator.
