Theme: BEWARE OF COVETOUSNESS

Text: “And He said to them, Guard yourselves and keep free from all covetousness (the immoderate desire for wealth, the greedy longing to have more); for a man’s life does not consist in and is not derived from possessing overflowing abundance or that which is over and above his needs.” – Luke 12:15 (Amplified Bible).

Comment: In our consumer-oriented society, most people tend not to labour according to their need, but according to their greed; and in their pursuit for the so-called “good life”, they ignore their responsibilities as good stewards of Christ, and often miss out on the “truly good life” – a life of peace with God and service to Him. The rich man in Christ’s parable (Luke 12:16-21) was not a fool for harvesting abundant crops; rather he was a fool for letting his wealth take the place of God in his heart. (See Proverbs 30:7-9) It was the Psalmist who prayed, “Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.” (Psalm 119:36) The Christian attitude towards other people’s possessions and wealth generally should be one of contentment and appreciation for what God has provided for His children. – Psalm 37:16; 1 Thessalonians 5:18; Ephesians 5:20.
