Theme: THE SIGNICANCE OF THE NAMES AND TITLES OF GOD ALMIGHTY
Text: “For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” – Exodus 34:14.
Comment: To God Almighty alone belongs the honour of being worshipped. (Exodus 20:5) He created us and the entire universe. We should not dishonor Him and thereby provoke Him to anger by worshipping other gods, whether such are spirits, human beings or material things. “God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.” – Nahum 1:2.
When the people of Israel arrived a plain or valley in the land of Moab, they began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab. “And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.” When things go wrong in God’s Organization, He starts the judgment process by calling the leaders to account. In this case the leaders of the Israelites were found complicit in the offence and Moses was directed to hang them. He also commanded the judges of Israel, “Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.” Howbeit, God commended and blessed Phinehas for the action he took to deal with a case of immorality in the camp lest God Almighty consumes the people in His jealousy. (Numbers 25:1-13.) We should pray constantly to remain faithful to our Creator.
