Text: “Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly.” – Hebrews 13:18.
Comment: The final chapter of St Paul’s letter to the Hebrew Christians includes the request for prayers from the brethren while reiterating the importance of having a good conscience and living honestly. Unfortunately, many in today’s world choose to deaden their conscience and succumb to the challenges of the global economic downturn to live dishonest lives. Business partners cheat each other, expired food items are sold to unsuspecting victims and traders falsify measures to gain advantage by selling smaller quantities for the price of more. Anyone with a good conscience won’t indulge in such ungodly practice notwithstanding the allure of personal gain. Scriptures admonish against selfish acts including cheating which are not convenient and are contrary to God’s will. (Proverbs 20:10, 23; Philippians 2:3, 4) The virtue of uprightness, the love of God, and unselfish love for one’s neighbour require a pure conscience.
