Theme: BEWARE OF COVETOUSNESS

Text: “Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour’s wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour’s house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or anything that is thy neighbour’s.” – Deuteronomy 5:21.

Comment: The law of God against covetousness also stipulates that no one should have an inordinate desire to possess someone else’s spouse. True worshippers of God must bear this in mind, and never harbour such thoughts. The account in 2 Samuel 11 records how King David coveted Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah. King David, for that instant, allowed the evil desire of covetousness to overwhelm him and he went to ungodly lengths to satisfy his cravings. Indeed, when covetousness sets in, the mind becomes blind and it encourages sin to multiply just like David who got Uriah killed while also coveting his wife at the same time. God Almighty then sent His servant, Nathan to rebuke David and pronounce His (God’s) punishment upon him (2 Samuel 12:1-14) But as David acknowledged his sin, repented thoroughly and got God’s forgiveness, so too will the Almighty Father accept all who turn away from covetousness sincerely and genuinely.
