Text: “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry”. – Colossians 3:5.
Comment: When one covets something, the person creates an idol of that thing in one’s heart and mind, and becomes obsessed with it. This is a condition that challenges the love of God which ought to be in our hearts, and for this reason covetousness is likened to idolatry. The Bible warns: “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” (Romans 6:16) Worshippers of God must beware of covetousness because it can deprive us of our ultimate goal, which is everlasting life in God’s Kingdom. (1 Corinthians 6:9, 10) St. Paul stated: “For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.” – Ephesians 5:5.
