Text: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” – Jeremiah 17:9, 10.
Comment: The acceptability of our service to God is determined by the state of our heart. King David gave this understanding in his charge to his son Solomon to wit: “And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.” (1 Chronicles 28:9) The singular fact that God knows the hearts of all men is a clear indication that no one can do the work of God with deceit as all our thoughts and actions are naked and open before Him. – Galatians 6:7, 8; Hebrews 4:13; Job 34:21, 22.
