Text: “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.” – Matthew 15:18.
Comment: What brings defilement to an individual is not the food eaten by that individual, but the thoughts in the heart. The evil thoughts in a person’s heart such as the thought to commit murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, blasphemies or any other evil act has made that person already spiritually defiled or unclean before God. (Matthew 15:15-20) Even the prayer of such a person is an abomination before God. (Psalm 66:18, Proverb 15:28) The ultimate consequence of spiritual defilement is that such ones will not enter the Kingdom of God. (Revelation 21:27) To this end, we should cleanse ourselves from filthiness of the spirit which is concerned with removing evil thoughts from our hearts by allowing the word of God to have a cleansing effect on us. – Psalm 119:7-9; 2 Corinthians 7:1; Isaiah 1:16-20.
