Theme: THE DANGER OF APOSTASY
INTRODUCTION
The word “apostasy” is from the Greek term – apostasia, which comes from a verb that means “to stand away from”. The noun has the sense of desertion, abandonment, or rebellion. In the Christian Greek scriptures, it is referred to as: “Religious defection, a withdrawal or abandonment of the true cause, worship, and services to God Almighty”. An abandonment of what one has previously believed, professed and a total desertion of the principles of faith.
Text: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.” – Exodus 20:3, 5, 6.
Comment: God Almighty does not excuse those who worship Him when they later deviate and seek other gods, thereby becoming apostates. This law concerning idolatry (which is apostasy), is so important that it is the first of the ten commandments God gave to Moses. The danger lies in losing the protection and grace of God which keeps His worshippers. As stated in the text for today, those who abandon the true way for other gods or forms of worship incur the anger of God, and as God punished the natural Jews who did not heed this instruction, such ones are in danger of punishment except they repent, trace their ways back to the true God and secure His mercy. – Amos 3:2, 3; Isaiah 1:16-20.
