Theme: Some Noble Christians of the Bible

Text: “Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellow labourer.” – Philemon 1:1.

Comment: St. Paul wrote a letter through Tychicus, his associate and aide to Philemon who was a leader in the Colossian Church. Paul addressed Philemon as a “dearly beloved and fellow labourer” (Verse 1) Philemon had a runaway slave called Onesimus. He ran away from Colossae to Rome but came in contact with Paul who led him to Christ. Paul’s letter to Philemon is centred on forgiveness for Onesimus “who in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable” to Philemon and Paul himself. (Verse 11) Paul’s letter to Philemon actually demonstrates a beautiful and majestic change from slavery to brotherhood in Christ because of forgiveness and Christian affection. – Matthew 6:14,15.
