Text: “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” – Matthew 5: 13, 14.
Comment: During Christ’s sermon on the mount at the start of his earthly mission, he used the mineral element, “salt”, and the solar element, “light” to describe what the behaviours of his followers should be. ‘Salt’ is a crystalline, colourless and odourless substance that is used to garnish food. In quantity and cost, salt is the least ingredient, yet it is the catalyst that brings out the taste of all others in the food; its absence makes the meal tasteless. ‘Light’ is an object of illumination that pushes back darkness, and gives brightness to show man his way. Jesus Christ is the Light of the world and the whole world needs him. – John 8: 12; 9:5
