Theme: WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A CHRISTIAN
INTRODUCTION
: In the life and teachings of Jesus Christ our Redeemer and Saviour, are portrayed all that make for a true disciple of Christ. And according to the Scriptures, it is one’s heart condition, which must be right with God, and one’s ability by God’s power to translate the vital beliefs and the high ideals of Christianity into practice that is of greater importance than our verbal confession of the faith. Many people claim to be Christians today, but by their actions and deeds, they do not deserve to bear that title. There is therefore the urgent need to properly understand what it means to be a Christian so as to live up to the true ideals of Christianity – which is a way of life and belief system patterned after the life and character of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Text: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30.
Comment: Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ – the good Shepherd – is making a clarion call to all and sundry to come to him so as to find spiritual rest and freedom. He is the Shepherd and Bishop of all those who are in need of spiritual and physical food, healing, care and mercy. (1 Peter 2:25) Jesus Christ finds joy in seeing the weak and suffering people gain spiritual and physical healing. True Christians should learn of him and endeavour to follow his footsteps. “It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord…” (Matthew 10:25; John 10:27-29) To learn of Christ, therefore, means to emulate and demonstrate in practical terms Christ-like virtues so as to be blessed and saved by God Almighty. “…put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” – Romans 13:14.
