Text: “And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine and cups, and I said unto them, “Drink ye wine. But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever.” – Jeremiah 35:5, 6.
Comment: The Bible lays great emphasis on obedience. One story that quickly comes to mind is the obedience of the Rechabites. They were a group of kenites linked to the Jews for many years. Among the commands coming down from their father was that as alien residents, they should not drink wine. When the Babylonians were attacking Israel, Jeremiah brought the Rechabites to a dining room in the temple. At God’s direction, Jeremiah set wine before them. And because of the respect they had for their father, the Rachabites obeyed by not drinking the wine. (Jeremiah 35:3-10) Thus, Jeremiah conveyed to them commendation from God Almighty and promised them a bright future. (Jeremiah 35:14, 17-19, Exodus 20:12) The onus therefore rests on everyone to prove himself as an obedient child of God which will redound to God’s protection by His grace. – Isaiah 1:19, Job 36:11.
