Theme: ONLY IN JESUS CHRIST WILL MANKIND FIND REST
INTRODUCTION
Following man’s fall through disobedience at Eden’s Garden, never a time has he enjoyed absolute peace. Lamenting his sorry state, the Patriarch Job stated: “Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.” (Job 14:1) The woes of man have been compounded even the more, in this age when the arch-enemy of God and man, knowing he has but a short time, is fermenting distresses on the children of men, ranging from the menace of false religionists, inhumane policies of governments, disasters, high cost of living, decaying moral standards, and man’s inhumanity in general. In the midst of these, the Prince of Peace beckons on his sheep: “…then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” (Luke 21:28) We shall in the days ahead consider the mission of Jesus Christ with regard to the peace and salvation of mankind; who has been plunged into spiritual darkness, captivity and distress.
Text: “And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” – Luke 2:9, 13, 14.
Comment: In disclosing the good news to the shepherds on the night of our Saviour’s auspicious birth, the angel said: “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10, 11) This pronouncement expressly spells out the mission of Jesus Christ. Earlier, the prophet Isaiah had prophetically designated him, “The Prince of Peace”, adding, “Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end…” (Isaiah 9:6, 7) In fulfilment, the coming of Jesus Christ, through the shedding of his innocent blood and preaching of the glad tidings of his Father’s Kingdom, brought relief to mankind, especially those who accept and continue in the truth. – 1 John 1:5-7; Hebrews 4:1.
