Theme: BEWARE OF COVETOUSNESS

Text: “Because he hath oppressed and hath forsaken the poor; because he hath violently taken away an house which he builded not; Surely he shall not feel quietness in his belly, he shall not save of that which he desired.” – Job 20:19, 20.

Comment: The leading text for today highlights the consequences of covetousness. One who covets what does not belong to him “shall not feel quietness in his belly, and shall not save of that which he saved”. By their acts of covetousness, Ahab and Jezebel died violently and much of their posterity was wiped out. (1 Kings 22:34-38; 2 Kings 9:30-37) Oppression, which covetousness encourages, is bad. It does not show love for one’s neighbour (Romans 13:9, 10) Nehemiah recognised this in his days and warned the Jews sternly against it. (Nehemiah 5:1-15) If we love our neighbours as ourselves, we will not covet their possessions, positions, glory or wealth and we will not oppress them to acquire those things. But if we do not beware of covetousness, we will offend God Almighty and suffer negative repercussions in the end. – Proverbs 9:12.
