Theme: THE VOICE OF CONSCIENCE

INTRODUCTION

The Oxford English Dictionary defines conscience as, “the internal acknowledgment or recognition of the moral quality of one’s motives and actions; the sense of right and wrong as regards things for which one is responsible; the faculty or principle which judges the moral quality of one’s actions or motives.”  Therefore, the instinct bestowed by God Almighty in man which enables him to naturally discern between right and wrong is referred to as conscience. (Romans 2:14-16) It is used interchangeably with the words – Heart, Mind, Spirit, etc., in some parts of the Scriptures. The conscience is thus able to help us determine the right course of action on any matter in our daily life such that we weigh them based on, “If I do it, will God be pleased with me?”; “Will the Church be proud of me?”; “Will my family be proud of me?” Our consciences give us the right answer and when we listen to it and adhere to the voice of conscience, we will not fall short of the promise of eternal life by God’s grace.

Text: “A murderer’s tormented conscience will drive him into hell (destruction)…” – Proverbs 28:17 (Living Bible). – Parenthesis ours.

Comment: When one commits a sin such as murder, even when the long arm of the law has not caught up with such an individual, his conscience which is the inner “policeman” in man torments him continually, as aptly stated in the text for today. The devil being a crafty being, seizes the moment our guard is down or careless and entices us to indulge in iniquitous acts. Also, our greed when left unchecked makes us easy prey to the devil’s antics. Such was the case with Judas Iscariot who betrayed our Lord and Master for pecuniary gain. The Bible clearly shows how his conscience tormented him after he committed the despicable act of betrayal of a Just Soul. (Matthew 27:3-5) The example of Judas is a strict warning to worshippers of God to always listen to the inner voice of conscience. “For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.” – 1 John 3:20, 21.
