Theme: Seek ye first the Kingdom of God

Text: “And if thy hand offend thee, cut if off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched.” – Mark 9:43.

Comment: Our Lord Jesus Christ did not by this text mean that we should cut off our hands if we feel any pains. He used the hand, foot, and eye separately to symbolize anything that is precious to us and thereby to illustrate the value of sacrifices we, his followers, should make in order to prove ourselves worthy of the Kingdom of God. If anything, that is very dear to us would cause us to go to everlasting destruction, it will be better to deny ourselves and forsake that thing – even if it is as precious as an eye, hand or foot – so that we may enter God’s Kingdom. Anyone who wants to be a disciple of Christ indeed, must be ready to deny himself of ungodly practices and pleasures so as to be saved by God in His Kingdom. – Matthew 16:24; Mark 8:35, 36.
