Theme: The Love of Money

Text: “…I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich: Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me…” – Genesis 14:22-24.

Comment: When the news of the abduction of Lot got to Abraham, during the invasion of Sodom and Gomorrah by Chedorlaomer and other kings, Abraham made arrangement for his release. (Genesis 14:14) After the defeat of the invading kings and their troops, Abraham “brought back all the goods and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people. In an expression of gratitude to Abraham, “The king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.” Today’s text contains Abraham’s response to the king. Simply put, Abraham was not greedy of gain. He, deciding that no mortal takes the credit for his wealth, in a show of contentment; as an example for us, declined the offer of the king.
