Theme: THE DANGER OF HYPOCRISY

Text: “The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?” – Matthew 16:1-3.

Comment: From ancient times, some of the Jews had shown a disdain and faithlessness in God, prompting the Father to assert that, “The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.” (Isaiah 1:3) They can tell if the weather would be bright or stormy, but they feigned ignorance of the teachings and numerous miracles of the Saviour. (Jeremiah 8:7) It was highly hypocritical for the Pharisees and Sadducees to ask for a heavenly sign from Christ as if they would be persuaded to accept his messiahship. (Matthew 16:4) There is need for us, as worshippers of God, to understand the signs of the times by being spiritually vigilant and prayerful by God’s grace. – Luke 21:34-36; Ephesians 5:15-18.
