Theme: Christians and Vows

Text: “Then Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, if thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, Then it shalt be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering”.  – Judges 11:30, 31.

Comment: Jephthah was the despised warrior and son of a harlot who rose to fame over his military prowess and defeat of the enemies. Before embarking on a war with the Ammonites he made a costly and irreversible pronouncement to God seeking victory from the enemy forces as stated in the text for today. Some writers say he was rash with his tongue, others dubbed him as careless. But viewed spiritually, the Almighty God allowed his vow to teach us some object lessons. (1 Corinthians 10:11) The vow of Jephthah showed the seriousness the “natural branches” in the days of old attached to the making of vows. It speaks of the maturity, diligence, commitment and faithfulness of the individual worshipper of God. – Ecclesiastes 5:4-6; Psalm 76:11.
