Text: “For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 5:20.
Comment: The Sadducees and Pharisees usually claim to be practicing the righteousness of God but they were not. They were hypocrites; they said one thing and did another. (Matthew 23:2, 3) Christ said: “Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.” (Luke 12:1) The exhortation of Jesus Christ in the text under reference is that we should be practical Christians. Our Lord further exhorted: “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” (John 13:17; James 2:12; Job 15:34) Those who seek everlasting life should endeavour to practice the righteousness of God, faithfully and zealously till the end. – Matthew 24:12, 13.
