Text: “Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand. And they covet fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.” – Micah 2:1, 2.
Comment: An extreme form of covetousness is avarice, which is marked by cold-hearted worldliness and an unreasonably strong desire to acquire wealth or possessions. This is usually practised by wicked persons in positions of power, and this was exactly what King Ahab did to Naboth, with the help of his infamous wife, Jezebel. Ahab’s desire was an act of covetousness because he became unhappy and miserable over a property that belonged to someone else. He was too keen to acquire possessions and he set out to obtain Naboth’s vineyard by falsehood, bribery and murder. (1 Kings 21:1-16) Again, we see that with covetousness, sin begets sin and it incurs the anger of God on one. – 1 Kings 21:17-26, Romans 1:28-32.
