Theme: CASTING ALL YOUR BURDENS ON CHRIST
INTRODUCTION:
The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines “casting” as “an act of throwing something/somebody somewhere. A “burden” is a duty, responsibility, etc. that causes worry, difficulty or hard work; a heavy load that is difficult to carry: it is also termed “care”, “desires”, “need”, “worries”, “Christ” means “messiah”, “saviour”. He is the Only Begotten Son of God Almighty. (John 1: 1-3, 10-14) The headings as used in the theme means total dependence or reliability on Christ by laying all our worries and pains on him as our succourer and salvation. In the following days, we shall be expatiating on the need and benefits of casting our burdens on Christ by God’s grace.
Text: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28.
Comment: Holy Prophets of God – like Jacob, Moses, Isaiah and Simeon – had been inspired by God to foretell the coming of the Messiah, ‘Shiloh’ (the peaceful one), “and unto him shall the gathering of the people be” (Genesis 49:10; Deuteronomy 18:15; Isaiah 9:6, 7; Luke 2:30-32; etc.) In the synagogue in Nazareth, before all Israel, Christ declared his mission to give succour the poor and needy, “to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives…to preach the acceptable year of the Lord’ (Luke 4:16-21) Warning that his gospel would cause divisions between believers and unbelievers within families (Luke 12: 51); he soothingly offered his peace to believers, peace such that the world can never give (John 14:27) Anyone who heeds his call in the text for today shall surely find peace. – John 16:33.
