Theme: The Love of Money

Text: “Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly, not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind”. – 1 Peter 5:2.

Comment: Amongst other reasons, it is because of the nourishing effect of God’s word that the apostles of Christ and their helpers were given the charge “Feed my sheep”. (John 21:15-17; Acts 20:28) It is sad to observe that this principal duty of expounding God’s word which in turn instills discipline, right conduct in the people, have been replaced with falsehood in order to make merchandise of the gullible. This was the attitude of Joel and Abiah, both sons of Samuel the prophet. (1 Samuel 8:3) The term “oversight” as used by Apostle Peter is in reference to the mandate given to leaders in God’s organization to be visible shepherds over His flock, by way of providing guidance, spiritually speaking. This, they should willingly do, prioritizing this mandate over financial or other material gains by the grace of God. – Isaiah 58:1; Ezekiel 3:17.
