Theme: THE VOICE OF CONSCIENCE

Text: “And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.” – 2 Samuel 24:10.

Comment: King David was a God-fearing prophet of the Most High God. However, during his reign as King of Israel, he made some mistakes that portrayed the weakness of the flesh and the imperfections of man. He numbered Israel contrary to God’s will. It is noteworthy that he never justified himself, but rather allowed the dictates of his conscience to guide him to make amends. He therefore acknowledged his errors and sought God’s forgiveness as vividly illustrated in the text under reference. (See Psalms 38:4, 18; 40:12; 51:9) Richard Bach, in his literary work: “The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah” stated, “Your conscience is the measure of the honesty of your selfishness. Listen to it carefully.” St Paul had this understanding of the unique place a good conscience occupies in human undertakings. – Acts 24:16.
