Theme: THE DANGER OF HYPOCRISY

Text: “In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.” – Luke 12:1.

Comment: On an occasion when Jesus went out to preach, a large crowd of people gathered to listen to him, and knowing that not all of them were his genuine disciples, he began to warn that they should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is nothing short of hypocrisy. They said one thing, and did another. (Matthew 23:1-4) At another instance, when he told the disciples to “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees”, they thought he was talking about loaves of bread. But later, “understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.” (Matthew 16:6-12) We should not be like the Pharisees whose identity includes false doctrines, pretence, observance of traditions, insistence on the laws of Moses and keeping of ceremonial laws, instead of submitting themselves to the law of grace brought by Christ. – John 1:17.
