Theme: BEWARE OF COVETOUSNESS

Text: “But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him.” – 2 Kings 5:20.

Comment: Today’s text highlights the verbal thoughts of Gehazi after Elisha, his master, declined to accept gifts of appreciation from Naaman, a captain of the Syrian army. Gehazi coveted those gifts and proceeded to deceive Naaman in order to satisfy his desire for money and clothes which were not meant for him. But he was exposed by Elisha although he (Gehazi) tried to cover up his sin by telling a lie. In the end, he was punished with the leprosy of Naaman. (2 Kings 5:20-27) Covetous conduct should not be encouraged or covered-up, whether in adults or children. Elisha did not overlook Gehazi’s covetousness. This was a mark of his faithfulness to God and love for a fellow worshipper. (Proverbs 27:5; 1 Timothy 5:20). We must also reproof covetousness like Joshua, Nehemiah, Nathan, Elijah and a host of others did in the Bible and not suffer sin upon God’s people. – Leviticus 19:17; 1 Corinthians 5:9-11.
