THE SIGNICANCE OF THE NAMES AND TITLES OF GOD ALMIGHTY
Text: “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.” – Genesis 17:1.
Comment: The Creator of the heavens and earth is the Almighty God, a title which signifies that He is “God of gods and the Lord of lords” (Deuteronomy 10:17) and that with Him nothing is impossible. (Luke 1:37) When because of the unfaithfulness of the Israelites the Philistines took the ark of God, they took it to Ashdod to the house of their god Dagon. But when they rose early the following day, they found their idol had fallen face-down to the ground with both the palms of his hands cut off. That apart, the people of Ashdod suffered from a grievous sickness. The ark was then carried to Gath. The situation was no different. Next they sent it to Ekron, where the people suffered a similar fate. (1 Samuel 5:1 – 6,12) The ark had to be returned to the land of Israel. – 1 Samuel 6:1-21.
When Moses father-in-law, Jethro, heard from him what God had done for His people “rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians. And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.” – Exodus 18:8-11.
