Theme: DIGNITY OF LABOUR

Text: “The hand of the diligent shall bear rule, but the slothful shall be under tribute” – Proverbs 12:24.

Comment: Instances are many to cite in both sacred and profane history concerning enterprising people who by dint of hard work have attained positions of honour in society.  While some of their contemporaries were idling away their precious times with flimsy excuses, these wise ones were giving their hours to studies or were busy learning some trades or some other useful things.  Today, they are reaping materially the fruit of their labours. “…and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.” –  Psalm 90:17

Even if a person’s income is not much, he should take pride in himself because he is paying his bills and could manage with what he is getting as income.  Contentment is central to having a satisfied life. (1 Timothy 6:6-10)  It is only through toil and sweat that man can get things done. Concerning Hezekiah the Bible says: “And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, and in the law, and in the commandments, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart, and prospered.” (2Chronicles 31:21)  We should not feel ashamed to engage in menial jobs that could earn us means to sustain and improve our welfare neither should we shirk from performing little but lawful tasks, for, as the Scripture says: “The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.” – Proverbs 12:24.
