Theme: THE VICE OF WRATH

Text: “And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.” – Genesis 4:6, 7.

Comment: It was because Abel’s offering, which had every mark of faith, was accepted by God and that of Cain with his characteristic evil inclination was rejected, he (Cain) grew annoyed. Hence, the rebuke from God to him as reflected in today’s text as he was incensed by envy. In spite of what God told him, he showed no repentance but went further to commit a more heinous sin by killing his own brother and thus had a bad record of being the first murderer on earth. Out of provocation some people have committed murder. Even if their anger is justified, their wicked action by taking the law into their hands betrays and makes void their right. And worse still is the fact that in many cases their anger is unreasonable and improper. See Proverbs 27:4.
