Theme: FORGIVENESS

INTRODUCTION

King James Bible Concordance defines “Forgiveness” as “the state of being pardoned, excused or absolved”. Forgiveness presupposes that a wrong has been done, an offence committed by one party against another, which demanded retribution, punishment, or even death. Without forgiveness of sins, mankind is doomed and cannot obtain salvation.  We shall, in the coming weeks, x-ray what Forgiveness really entails, and the benefits it brings to those who are exercised therein.

Text: “The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.” – Ezekiel 18: 20, 21.

Comment: Sin, which came into the world as result of the disobedience of Adam at the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:16-19; Romans 5:12) is the bane of man in this evil world. In God Almighty, there is no unrighteousness. (Deuteronomy 32:4; Psalm 33:4) He had, however, set before mankind “life and death, blessing and cursing”, but advised, “therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live” (Deuteronomy 30:15, 19) The text for today expatiates on these choices – forgiveness and God’s favour for those who repent and forsake their evil ways; or curses upon those who turn from their righteousness to do wickedness. He will not acquit the guilty as all who are wicked will be judged and punished according to their sins while the righteous shall be blessed and saved by His grace. – Galatians 6:7, 8.
