Theme: KEEP THY HEART WITH ALL DILIGENCE

Text: “Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem… And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.” – 2 Chronicles 25:1-2.

Comment: The fruitlessness of doing good works which are not based on a right heart condition before God is evident in the life of King Amaziah. He did good works in the service of God, but the heart condition with which he carried out those good works was not right with God, and it did not end well with him. (2 Chronicles 25:1-2, 27-28) When one’s heart is not right with God, it would someday become evident. When Simon (the sorcerer) of Samaria professed to have been converted from sorcery to the Christian faith, he exhibited an evil heart condition when he offered money to the apostles in order to purchase the gift of the Holy Spirit. St Peter rebuked him thus: “Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.” (Acts 8:21, 22) St. Peter’s stern rebuke to Simon is a wake-up call to true converts to beware of the thoughts of their hearts.
