Theme: SPIRITUAL MINDEDNESS, KEY TO HEALTHY LIVING

Text: “Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.” – James 5:9.

Comment: To hold grudge against one is to harbour a feeling of resentment or ill will, especially one lasting for a long time against the person.  There is justified anger, which is called righteous indignation. One who is not angry when he should, has not done well, because the anger is supposed to lead him to correct what is wrong. But the anger should not be prolonged such that one holds bitter malice against the other person. Over the long term, the grudge or bitterness could lead to depression as well as high blood pressure, and increased risk of heart disease.

Dr. Charles Raison, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Emory University School of Medicine, told CNN in an interview: “If you allow negative feelings to crowd out positive feelings, you might find yourself swallowed up by your own bitterness or sense of injustice.” Experts say that avoidance of grudge leads one to healthier relationships, greater spiritual and psychological well-being, less anxiety, stress and hostility,  lower blood pressure, fewer symptoms of depression, lower risk of  alcohol and substance abuse.  “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.” – Colossians 3:12-14.
