Theme: THE SIGNICANCE OF THE NAMES AND TITLES OF GOD ALMIGHTY

Elihu, the son of Barachel, a Buzite, declared in Job 36:26: “Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.” And our Lord Jesus Christ makes us to understand that “no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him”. (Matthew 11:27) The point is that it is what God Almighty has revealed about Himself through The Word, Jesus Christ that we know. The wonder and glory of the divine Person in regard to His character and relationships are revealed in His names. According to the Easton’s Bible Dictionary, God Almighty is the “eternal, infinite, perfect, and incomprehensible Being, the Creator of all things, who preserves and governs all by his almighty power and wisdom, and is the only proper object of worship.  Jesus Christ our Saviour says: “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” – John 17:3.

Text: “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.” – Exodus 20:7.

Comment: The name which God Almighty took exclusively to Himself is JEHOVAH. (Exodus 6:3; Psalm 83:18) The name should be hallowed, meaning that it should be held in awe or deep reverence, and should not to be taken in vain. (See Exodus 20:7; Psalm 111:9) We should not go to law courts and swear falsely in God’s name. He would punish all such ones except they repent. Christians are not to swear anymore. – Matthew 5:33-37; James 5:12.

Also, we should not do anything that will bring reproach to the name of God and His work.  Apostle Paul stated: “Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege? Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God? For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.” (Romans 2:20-24) Rather, we should do good works that will make people glorify God Almighty.  (Matthew 5:16) The Almighty God declared through His servant that “for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.” –1Samuel 2:30.
