Theme: The Essence of Self Comportment

Text: “And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.” – 2 Kings 2:23, 24.

Comment: Children have a special place in God’s arrangement. Some qualities that distinguish children from adults are innocence, humility, trust, truthfulness, forgiveness, and even simplicity. Christ used their qualities as marks of true conversion, and to chastise his disciples when they became embroiled in tussle for superiority. (Mark 9:33-37). For those children in the text for today: their foolish jesting took them too far in deriding a revered prophet of the MOST HIGH. Their fate is a warning to children of our generation, not to indulge in “foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient” and disrespect for elders. – Ephesians 5:4; Ephesians 6:1-3.
