Theme: THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Text: “If ye then being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” – Luke 11:13.

Comment: Our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, in this text for today, enjoins all his followers to pray to God to give them the Holy spirit, in that without it no one can be successful as a disciple. Scripture says: “…Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.” (Romans 8:9) When Moses, the servant of God, complained that the burden of the people was too much for him, God told him to assemble 70 men of the elders of Israel to the tabernacle of the congregation and that He would take of the spirit in him and put upon them “and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone”. (Numbers 11:11-17) And so it was that when the Holy spirit came upon the assembled elders “they prophesied, (that is, spake the word of God) and did not cease”. Even two of them who were left in the camp, Eldad and Medad, received the spirit where they were located and also prophesied. (Numbers 11:24-27) When Moses’ lieutenant, Joshua implored Moses to stop them, his reply was “…would God that all the LORD’S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!” (Numbers 11:28, 29) “Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.” – Proverbs 1:22, 23. Compare Psalm 51:10, 11.
