Text: “But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7.
Comment: The instance of Eliab, the eldest son of Jesse – father of David – emphasized the fact that one may possess all the physical attributes/requirements needed to be appointed into a position of authority judging by human assessment, yet such a person may not be so favoured by God to occupy such position due to his heart condition which is never visible to man but known only to God. (Jeremiah 17:9,10)It is with this understanding that the apostles of Jesus Christ prayed to God concerning the two disciples, Barsabas and Mathias for one of them to be chosen by God to replace Judas Iscariot when they said, “…Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.” – Acts 1:24-26.
