Text: “The lazy man longs for many things; but his hands refuse to work.” –
Proverbs 21:25, New Living Translation.
Comment: It is commonly said that human needs are insatiable. According to the American Psychologist Maslov, human physiological needs are regarded as the most basic of the needs that humans have. These are needs that are very crucial for survival. Examples of human physiological needs are food, shelter, warmth, health, homeostasis, and water, etc. God Almighty has in His wisdom made provision for man to attain these needs, however, man must labour to successfully satisfy his needs. Scripture says, “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.”- 2 Thessalonians 3:10 (New Living Translation).
It is certain that those who are lazy are likely to remain perpetually in want, and poverty will be such a person’s companion. The Bible warns, “But you lazy bones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up? A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest – then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.” – Proverbs 6:9-11 (New Living Translation). Children of God should be diligent in labour and be faithful in seeking God’s benevolence as they go about their honest daily quest for bread and working with industry to take care of their physiological needs.
